A Bad Day For The First Ammendment
Marine Corps Vet and former Teacher
of the Year in Chesterfield, VA. Fired for Butt-Print Artwork...
"Murmer went to great lengths to keep his work life separate
from his activities as an artist, said ACLU executive director
Kent Willis. As a butt-printing artist, he goes by the name
"Stan Murmur," and appears in disguise in photographs
and videos promoting his art."

Doomsday Clock Closer to Midnight as Nuclear
War Risk Grows
"The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists
(BAS) announced this week that the minute hand of the symbolic
"Doomsday Clock" will move closer to midnight on January
17, 2007. This shift is the first such change to the Clock since
February 2002:
The major new step reflects growing concerns
about a "Second Nuclear Age" marked by grave threats,
including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured
nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing "launch-ready"
status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S.
and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate
change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase
proliferation risks.
The January 17 announcement will take place
simultaneously in two locations: at 9:30 a.m. ET at the American
Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C.,
and at 2:30 p.m. GMT in London at The Royal Society. Speakers
will include Stephen Hawking, BAS director Kennette Benedict,
Royan Society president Sir Martin Rees, Case Western physics
and astronomy professor Lawrence M. Krauss, and International
Crisis Group co-chair Ambassador Thomas Pickering." via

Three Films
We watched these three interesting films
recently. Val is writing a paper for school so we've had lots
of discussions about how they relate to each other and why they
are important. The images link to online reviews and analysis
of the three films.
1. Michael Snow's "Wavelength"
2. Michelangelo Antonioni's "The Passenger"
3. Werner Herzog's "Aguirre, Wrath of God"
We found that one of the themes that these
films have in common is that of fate-driven, path-following
characters. In "Wavelength", the camera movement (which
in this case, is the main character, or the viewer) detirmines
the path towards the eternal. In "The Passenger",
it is Robertson's datebook that moves the story and Locke forward
towards his death, and in "Wrath of God", the river
delivers them to their fate.
